Akufo-Addo travels to Mali on Thursday

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is expected to travel to Mali on Thursday, July 23 to help in mediation talks in that country.

This is going to be the first travel of the president in barely four months, following his closure of Ghana’s borders due to coronavirus.

Over the period, he went into a 14-day precautionary self-isolation, resuming official duties just last Monday.

He is reported to have chaired an emergency cabinet meeting on Tuesday.

President Akufo-Addo will be in the Eastern Region capital of Koforidua on Wednesday, July 22 to cut sod for the construction of the new Eastern Regional Hospital.

His busy schedule will continue on Thursday, this time outside the jurisdiction, following a request by the African Union to have him and some other leaders on the continent travel to Bamako to resolve the political crisis in the West African country.

This was disclosed by the Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, on GTV’s ‘AskTheInfoMinistry’ hosted by Thelma Tackie on Tuesday.

Mr Oppong Nkrumah admitted that the border restrictions are not exclusive as there are exceptions.

“Monday, [President Akufo-Addo] started work from his office,” he stated.

“[Tuesday], he chaired an emergency cabinet meeting.

“On Thursday, he will be going to Bamako in Mali. The African Union has requested him, the President of Nigeria and a couple of other leaders to go to Mali and help resolve some of the political tensions and challenges they are having there.

“The borders remain closed except for exceptions which we give for those who are going and those who are coming in.”

The other leaders expected to join President Akufo-Addo will be Senegal’s Macky Sall, Ivory Coast’s Alassane Ouattara and Niger’s Mahamodou Issoufou, who is also Ecowas Chairman.

The sub-regional bloc has already appointed former Nigeria President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to lead the mediation talks.
