Prof Gyampo can’t be PPP flagbearer – Nii Armah

Executive Secretary for Progressive People’s Party (PPP) Richard Nii Armah has debunked claims that Professor Ransford Gyampo, a renowned Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana, is to be elected as the party’s presidential candidate for election 2020.

He wants the general public to treat such claims or publication with contempt, revealing that Prof. Gyampo is not a card-bearing member of PPP and does not qualify to contest in any election on the ticket of the party.

Nii Armah revealed this on the Yensempa morning show on Onua FM on Wednesday, July 22.

He stated vehemently that Prof. Gyampo is not a registered member of the party and cannot contest or be elected to run in the 2020 presidential race for PPP.

He told host Anokyewaba Adwoa Serwah that the Political Scientist does not meet the party’s qualification criteria since his name is not captured in PPP’s database as a party member and would want the general public to discredit any publication of that sort.

“As far as I am concerned, Prof. Gyampo is not a member of PPP and does not qualify to be our flagbearer,” he stressed, “and me as the Executive Director for PPP, I cannot find Professor Ransford Gyampo’s name in the party’s database so I was surprised to have seen publication that the lecturer is likely to be PPP presidential candidate.”

Commenting on the party’s announcement on nomination for presidential candidates, Nii Armah revealed the founder and leader of the party, Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, will not contest as the flagbearer of the party come December 2020 after representing the party since 2012.

He said Dr. Nduom during the 2016 electioneering campaign announced his retreat in contesting the presidential race hence he is not expected to file for the race now that the party has opened nomination for interested but eligible members.

Any Ghanaian, who is 40 years and above is entitled to pick nomination but must be a card-bearing member of PPP and of good standing in the party, he noted.

In the case of no one filing for the party’s presidential race, Nii Armah said PPP would then resort to focusing on the Parliamentary elections so that the party could have representatives in Parliament.
