Former President John Dramani Mahama says the deployment of the military in the just-ended voter registration exercise was deliberately to intimidate members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
He said the army officers were absent in strongholds of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) but very visible in those of the NDC.
“I have seen the military deployment,” he stated in an interview with TV XYZ on Sunday, August 9, 2020.
“If you look at the deployment you can see that somebody was trying to achieve something.
“Mainly in the strongholds of the NDC, the military was very visible and then in constituencies that NPP seems likely to lose, the military was very visible.
“And in the very strongholds of the NPP there was no military.”
The NDC flagbearer, therefore, concluded: “So somebody might be trying to intimidate people and achieve a certain political consequence.”
He said there have been past voter registration exercises but they have not been characterized by the “intimidation” that the military seem to have been unleashed to create.
For him, the nature of some settlements in Ghana requires that some persons move from one town to the other to register.
Former President Mahama cited how some relatives of his live in the Ivory Coast and attend to family affairs in Ghana.
In those cases, he stated, their ancestor is a Ghanaians and so can come and register and vote in Ghana.
