Davis Opoku Ansah, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Mpraeso in the Eastern Region, has criticised the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for what he describes, as a blatant disregard for its members, following the party’s refusal to release the Mike Oquaye Committee report.
Mr Opoku Ansah, popularly known as OPK, expressed shock that the party was concealing a document detailing the reasons behind its electoral defeat from its “integral members”, yet asking them to submit proposals for amendments to the party’s constitution.
His comments came on Friday, hours after the NPP General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, issued a memorandum requesting members and identifiable groups to propose amendments to the party’s constitution.
Taking to Facebook on Friday, OPK, voiced his strong disapproval of the party’s handling of the matter.
“Proposals based on what data? On what facts? On what diagnosis?” he asked.
In a strongly worded post, OPK, criticised the General Secretary, stating: “Surprisingly, the same party, of which we are all integral members, charged a committee to investigate the reasons behind our electoral defeat.
“When the committee visited the Mpraeso Constituency, I rushed down to meet with them and immediately returned to Parliament to fulfil my duties. That is how seriously I took the exercise.
“Now that the committee has completed its work, not even a communiqué has been issued to share the executive summary of its findings. Instead, we are being invited to submit proposals for constitutional amendments.
“Proposals based on what data? On what facts? On what diagnosis?”
He continued: “The national party must take its members seriously. This is not how you recover from a humiliating defeat. We cannot pretend to fix the structure without first acknowledging what broke it.
“If we fail to open up the sore and press it properly, it will not heal. Let us get it right.”
The General Secretary’s memorandum, dated April 25, 2025, formally invited NPP members and identifiable groups to submit written proposals for constitutional amendments.
It indicated that submissions should be sent either to the Office of the General Secretary at the Party Headquarters, to the Constitutional Amendment Committee Secretary, or via email by Friday, 9th May 2025.
The memo further noted that an Extraordinary National Delegates Conference would be held in July 2025 to consider the proposed amendments and produce a revised constitution to address the party’s structural and critical challenges.
However, the absence of any formal communication on the findings of the Mike Oquaye Committee has stirred discontent among party members like Mr Opoku Ansah, who believe meaningful reforms cannot proceed without first confronting the issues that led to the party’s electoral loss.
