A large number of Gambians are still rejoicing over the exit of former President Yahya Jammeh after 22 years of ruling The Gambia.

The Editor of the Point newspaper Ousman Kargbo recounted to host of Yen Nsem Pa on Onua FM, Bright Kwesi Asempa on Monday morning, how the people jubilated when the ex-president of the smallest country in West Africa made his way into his flight on Saturday.

Ousman Kargbo said “When the former President was going, you can see people jubilating and others crying. It doesn’t look as if they want him back into the country in the next 5 years for now”.

Mr Jammeh was defeated in December 1 election by Adama Barrow, which he is disputing at the Supreme Court after his initial acceptance of results.

Ousman Kargbo further noted that the former President’s departure generally would have saddened the citizens but rather it was greeted with wild jubilation. “Yes there were people at the airport to see him off, some were crying while others were cheering but it was obvious they were relief that finally they can breathe air of freedom.”

Immediately after losing the elections, Yahya Jammeh closed down media houses that seem to oppose his zeal to hold on to power. Teranga FM is one of the stations that were shut down without any explanation.

Meanwhile, the editor of the Point newspaper Ousman Kargbo told Yen Nsem Pa that businesses which were hitherto closed after the elections, have been opened, adding that the media outlets that were shut down have also resumed full operations.

“Now business is back, people are now returning to their businesses as well as those who fled.”
