A local government expert has downplayed concerns that the law suit on the allocation of the district assembly common fund, will negatively affect the operations of the district assemblies.
There have been growing concerns over the suit by two students of law at the University of Cape Coast, John Ndebugri Awuni and Richard Kwadwo Nyarko, seeking to disallow MPs and Regional Coordinating Councils as beneficiaries of the District Assemblies Common Fund.
The plaintiffs claim such allocations contravene Article 252 of the constitution.
Many have argued that the suit might affect the smooth running of the district assemblies especially if it drags in court.
But, speaking with 3FM News, George Kyei Baffuor explained that the suit will rather make more resources available to the assemblies.
“There is no effect on the assemblies, rather it will make more resources available to the assemblies because resources that go to the regional coordinating councils (RCCs) and the MPs, Ministries and other areas if the court make a definite ruling that the monies should be distributed to assemblies and not any other institutions or bodies, then more resources will go to the assemblies and enhance their resources”.
