Omanhen of Twifo Traditional Area in the Central Region Dr Nana Appiah Nuamah ll has tasked the country’s leaders to have vision and ideas to drive the canker of poverty out of the country.
He expressed worry that many countries in the world are still struggling to achieve their goals due to bad implementation of policies and, tacitly, lack of proper vision by their leaders.
Speaking at a ceremony to confer on him an honorary doctorate degree, the Omanhen commended President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his vision and courage to roll out of the Free Senior High School Programme.
“The President officially launched government’s Free SHS policy, making good his resolve to ensure accessible, equitable, quality and life-changing education for every Ghanaian child,” he said.
“He said he wanted every Ghanaian child to attend secondary school not just for what they learn in books but for the life experiences that they will gain.”
The Twifo Omanhen, who is also the Central Region representative on the House of Chiefs, was optimistic on the sustainability of the Free SHS Policy and called on all Ghanaians to eschew cynicism and help with ideas to make the policy work.
Speaking on lack of infrastructure hampering effective implementation of Free SHS Policy, he said national and regional houses of chiefs have held several meetings and they have pledged their support to the government to expedite the process to get the dormitories and classrooms completed as soon as possible.
“Government alone cannot afford all the problems. Therefore, it is time we Nananom come together and show our support behind the government’s good work,” he appealed.
“I want seize this occasion to also plead with you to help end galamsey so we can protect the country’s resources for the benefit of all,” he added, lauding government for the measures such as stakeholders dialogue and negotiation meetings put in place.
Dr Appiah Nuamah ll expressed worry on how the menace has destroyed water bodies such as River Pra in the Central Region.
He said the government cannot fight galamsey without the involvement of the traditional leaders, hence appealed to them to support the president in ensuring a galamsey-free country.
He assured government of his support in helping end galamsey in the Central Region.
