The Member of Parliament for Assin South Constituency in the Central Region, Rev John Ntim Fordjour, has called on the Mines and Energy Committee in Parliament to take a look at the sporadic siting of fuel and gas stations across the country.
The Assin South Legislator said: “I would want to appeal to the Mines and Energy Committee to take a serious look at the siting of the fuel stations because if the state institutions fail to protect the citizenry, the orderly people will suffer”.
Rev Ntim fordjour made the call on TV3’s New Day while commenting on the gas explosion which occurred at Madina Atomic Junction over the weekend. Seven people lost their lives.
“Sporadic siting of these fuel stations must be checked because the business man would have had his company insured but lives that are lost cannot be recovered. Property cannot be salvaged,” the New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP explained.
He said “gas and fuel stations that are very close to residential areas must be closed and I think the committee on mines and energy may have to look at the law. We make the laws and if we have to make sure the laws are changed, we will have to do it. We have to move away from the rhetoric”.
The reverend added: “I would want to strongly support the actions by the EPA to ensure that we have safety because anytime they happen, we have had committees set up and they come out with their reports but the cause is not established”.
Rev Ntim Fordjour believes the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, will live up to his promise of ensuring that the laws governing gas and fuel stations are implemented by the appropriate bodies.
“I am not bringing in any political twist but we are in a new regime and looking at the implementations of most of [President Akufo-Addo’s] promises, it has earned him that reputation. In the few months we have seen the commitment that the President has put in the country and we must give praise to the President for the commitments that he is showing. President Akufo-Addo does not renege on his commitment and promises, so he will ensure the laws are adhered”.
Rev Fortdjour explained that “if a man has shown this commitment in fulfilling the promises that he made, no one should doubt him”.
