The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) on Wednesday destroyed three 20-footer containers of Asahi Mackerel seized last week.
Five hundred cartons of So Nice Mackerel were also destroyed in an operation at the Mile 7 Police Station.
But FDA fears some of the products may have found their way to Kumasi, Tamale and Takoradi.
Therefore, the FDA regional offices “have embarked on an intensive PMS exercise to ensure the products are not offered on sale to the general public”.
FDA intercepted the products on Wednesday, October 4 after a tip-off from residents of Ofankor in the Greater Accra Region.
The trucks carrying the products were stuck in mud at Ofankor but the stench got residents to raise alarm over the wholesomeness of the products.
According to further investigations by FDA, six 20-footer containers of the Asahi Mackerel were cleared at the Tema Harbour by importer Dotsisco Ventures.
They were on transit to Togo but were diverted to the Ghanaian market, investigations revealed.
Three of the containers were So Nice Mackerel products but only 500 cartons were impounded and destroyed at the expense of the importer.
“The FDA wishes to take this opportunity to commend and thank the residents of Ofankor for alerting the Authorities on the products and further wishes to encourage the general public to emulate the good action and neighbourliness exhibited by the residents of Ofankor,” a statement on Wednesday read.
