Hundreds of passengers as well as vehicles were stranded at the Yeji ferry station in Brong Ahafo Region.
There were no ferries at the station due to the ongoing civil works on the Bupei and Yapei bridges in the Northern Region.
Four days ago, the Yapei bridge, which is the main link between the northern and southern parts of Ghana, underwent civil repairs, compelling travellers to use other routes.
The situation is said to be inconveniencing most travellers.
Those from both the south and the north were still stranded on Friday, three days after the repair works began.
Most of the heavy-duty vehicles are loaded with perishable goods, which is generating more worries for the drivers, especially if they don’t get to their destinations in time.
Small vehicles are, however, ferried across the Volta Lake but unavailability of bigger ferries at Yeji is worsening conditions for the trucks.
The available routes left as options are the western and eastern corridors through Kumasi, the Yeji and Bimbilla routes on the other section on the eastern corridor.
Some of the heavy-duty vehicle drivers expressed their frustrations to MG News.
“We spend all our money and resources using the long route to the southern part of Ghana or northern part of Ghana yet we can’t use the ferry. Some of us are here for good three days, can you imagine?”
One of the officials of the ferry station apologized to the affected persons and assured them of bigger ferries in the coming days.
Meanwhile, work is ongoing on the Yapei bridge to put vehicles and travellers back on the road.
