In the heart of East Mamprusi Municipality in the North East region lies Nanyeri community, where the quest for education is an arduous journey. With no government school in sight, the community has taken it upon themselves to provide education for their children, facing numerous challenges along the way.
The only school in Nanyeri is a beacon of hope amidst a sea of adversity. Owned and managed by the community, with support from the Independent Minds Association, a local NGO, the school stands as a testament to the resilience and determination of the people. Teachers, employed and paid by the community chief, elders, and locals, receive a monthly stipend derived from communal contributions.
Infrastructure woes plague the school, from inadequate facilities to crumbling classrooms. The two-unit classroom blocks, constructed over a decade ago through communal effort, are now on the brink of collapse. With two classrooms lost to the elements, overcrowding is a pressing issue. Pupils cram into the remaining classrooms, and a significant portion of primary four students are forced to learn under trees.
Head teacher Mr. Stephen laments the fate of pupils who complete primary four, as they are left with no option but to seek education in the regional capital of Nalerigu. Many families cannot afford the transportation costs, leading to dropouts and perpetuating cycles of illiteracy.
Nanyeri is not alone in its struggle. Numerous communities in the East Mamprusi Municipality face similar challenges, awaiting decisive action from the government to address the dire need for schools. As a conscientious student journalist, I appeal to individuals, organizations, and NGOs to extend a helping hand to these communities.
To the government, philanthropists, and civil society organizations, I implore you to invest in constructing proper classrooms that will facilitate effective teaching and learning. Let us join forces to uplift these communities, provide quality education, and integrate them into the broader educational landscape. Only through collective action can we pave the way for a brighter future for the children of Nanyeri and beyond.
