The Accra Metropolitan Assembly has ordered all roadside evangelism, as well as the positioning of loud speakers outside premises of churches, mosques and pubs within the metropolis to cease from Monday as the Ga people begin their month-long ban on drumming and noise-making.
Residents are required within the period, to ensure that noise levels are minimised to the barest minimum possible.
The ban on drumming and noise-making is a customary rite preceding the celebration of the Homowo Festival of the chiefs and people of Ga Mashie in Accra.Consequently, religious activities by churches, mosques and others are to make sure their worship is confined to the premises of churches/mosques.
“Religious bodies and the Traditional Authorities must show respect for one another and restrain their followers from making derogatory and inflammatory remarks about the beliefs and practices of one another,” a statement issued by the AMA Thursday urged.
The Assembly said accredited personnel of the AMA, the Ga Traditional Council and the Police will be commissioned to enforce the ban which will last until June 14, 2018
“…No other person or group of persons should be seen or found enforcing the abatement of noise in the metropolis” it warned.
Below are the areas affected by the ban
- Northern Boundary: Boundary dividing Accra from the Eastern Region.
- Western Boundary: Odukpon Kpehe (Kasoa)
- Eastern Boundary: Osu In addition, residents are to note that all villages and towns under the Osu, Ngleshie Alata and Ga Traditional Councils are affected by this ban.
