Afenyo-Markin chides NDC over country’s security

Alexander Afenyo-Markin is the MP for Effutu

Member of Parliament (MP) for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has accused the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of deliberately exaggerating the security situation in the country.

He has cautioned that creating a negative impression about the state of security in the country could eventually mar its reputation.

Speaking on TV3’s New Day on the back  of concerns by the Ghana Bar Association for the security agencies to up their game, the Effutu MP warned the NDC to desist from making political capital out of the situation.

“We must also not create negative impression about our country because we are in opposition. It shouldn’t be the case,” he said.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin advised that as individuals, whether religious leaders, political leaders or citizens, everyone ought to be mindful of their utterances.

Even though he concedes and acknowledges some instances of kidnappings, robbery and  political attacks, the NPP MP contends that the situation is not that bad to warrant an “insecurity” status.

“People enjoy life till 3:00am on Thursdays, Friday and Saturday. So let’s not create that impression.

“Inasmuch as we have issues with robbery, kidnapping and somebody attacking another person for political reason, I won’t say it is an isolated case because if it is one, it is still an issue,” he explained.

He again noted that the bigger problem for him is the manner in which politicians present the issues in the media, noting they “get so emotional, and attack each other and all that”.

Meanwhile, MP for Builsa South Dr Clement Apaak asserts that the need for heightened security concerns stemmed from the fact that “the situation [security concerns] doesn’t seem to be going down”.

“The GBA is very right on its assessment. Ideally, we will all prefer not [to] experience these kinds of security breaches that will give us room to worry,” he said.
