Agona West MP deserts NPP, promises ‘doku’ to women as she goes independent

The Member of Parliament for Agona West, on the ticket of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mrs. Cynthia Mamle Morrison, has declared her intention to contest the December general elections as an independent parliamentary candidate.

The two-time MP for the area made her intention known when she addressed a gathering of chiefs and people of Agona Bobikuma in the Central region on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, after inspecting a school project in the community.

According her, going independent would be the surest way to complete ongoing projects in the constituency.

“By the grace of God I will go independent to enable me complete all projects” she announced, thanking a section of the residents whom she claimed have already started campaigning for her.

She clearly fell short of even campaigning for the NPP presidential candidate, urging the electorate to vote for whoever they deem fit.

“It is not NDC, it is not NPP, I’m standing for Agonaman.

“So if you are for John Mahama and you want to vote for him, it doesn’t concern me; if you will vote for Bawumiah, it doesn’t concern me.

“But the MP that needs to be voted for to complete her work is Cynthia Morrison,” she declared, speaking Fanti.

The MP felt she was let down by members of the NPP especially her executives, claiming they were influenced by money to curtail her ambition of returning to parliament for a third term.

“I have spent a lot that can develop this community but it is my executives, they ask for money and you don’t give to them they will vote against you. They don’t think about the nation or community,” she said accusing her trusted people of diverting and misappropriating funds meant for good causes.

The MP presented 100 bags of cement to the people and promised additional 200 at a total cost of GH¢30,000 as well as iron rods among others to complete the school building, which she said has been neglected by the municipal assembly.

Mrs. Morrison told the gathering that she had supported a number of people who have now turned against her. She however noted that the ingratitude of these constituents would not stop her from being kind to others.

She repeatedly professed her love for the aged as she promised the women in Agona West headgears, and assuring that the old men and youth would not be neglected.

“By the grace of God when I come, my old women, you doku is ready. My fathers and the youth yours is also there,” she promised.

She therefore charged the Assembly member for the area, whom she acknowledged as a known NDC functionary, to provide her with a list of women and men in the community to enable her know the number of people she would be dealing with in her support to them.

“I don’t want any NPP or NDC list because I’m now an independent aspirant,” she stressed.

The MP who claimed “even my friends have now turned my enemies”, promised that she would not discriminate against anyone.

Cynthia Morrison lost the New Patriotic Party parliamentary primary held on Saturday, April 13, 2024 to young and promising politician, Mr. Christopher Arthur.

She garnered 152 votes, while Chris Arthur, polled 240 to become the Parliamentary Candidate. Ben Yamoah polled 221, Yawson Otoo also had 168 and Joseph Afrankwa grabbed 155 votes.
