The Bank of Ghana’s 2025 financial statements confirm an operating loss of GH¢34.9 billion for the year (inclusive of other comprehensive income losses), compared with GH¢9.49 billion in 2024. These figures raise serious questions about the Central Bank’s explanation that the losses represent “the cost of maintaining economic stability.” Stability is important, but it cannot become a blanket justification for large financial losses without clear explanation. The central question is simple: could the same macroeconomic gains have been achieved at a lower cost? This concern is heightened by recent trends. The Bank had previously been narrowing its losses, while inflation…

The four are Philip Ayensu, Viraj Phat, Sophia Korkor and Justice Menka-Premoh. “The quartet have since been given bail pending further investigations,” a short notice on Monday, May 4 announced.

The Bank of Ghana’s 2025 operational loss has been described as a ”new low” in its recent history. In its 2025 Financial Statement published on May 1, 2026, the Bank of Ghana registered a huge operational loss of GH¢15.6 billion, which is the second highest loss by the Bank since the Cedi was redenominated in 2008. The 2025 loss, surprisingly, also surpassed the 2024 loss, which was seen as a positive outlook from the 2022 global economic crisis which hit the Bank of Ghana and other central banks around the world. With 2025 described as a non-crisis year, analyst have…
Dr Gideon Boako, the Member of Parliament for Tano North, has alleged that the Bank of Ghana’s liquidity management operations in 2025 effectively transferred public resources to commercial banks. In a statement reacting to the Bank’s 2025 financial statements, Dr Boako argued that the central bank’s handling of Open Market Operations (OMO) contributed significantly to its heavy losses while commercial banks recorded strong profits. “BoG booked the losses, commercial banks booked the profits,” he stated. According to him, the Bank’s OMO costs rose sharply from GH¢8.2 billion in 2024 to GH¢16.73 billion in 2025 after it abandoned the dynamic Cash…
