Empoli’s combative midfielder Afriyie Acquah has been handed a starting role by Black Stars coach James Kwesi Appiah in the last Round of 16 game at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations. The Stars are taking on the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia in a match to be played at the Ismailia Stadium. With both sides yet to lose a game in the tournament, the match promises to be exciting, especially following a north-and-west rivalry that has become a common fixture in the tournament. Ghana coach Appiah has his centre backs back together again after they both served different suspensions. John…
Over the years, my team and I have managed to consistently produce plays with the aim of changing some toxic narratives and above all, changing our mindset. Every play of mine has the family in mind. I believe society can only stand when the family unit is intact. Our style of theatre, thus, is to communicate inspiration, lessons and fun. On Saturday, July 20th, 2019 at the National Theatre, I will unveil my sixth play, THE BOY CALLED A GIRL, at 4pm and 8pm. This interesting family play is a musical which has been carved to address sensitive issues in…
Gabriel Jesus scored one goal and assisted another before being sent off as Brazil won a first Copa America title in 12 years, beating Peru 3-1. Manchester City forward Jesus set up Everton to volley in the opener before scoring the decisive second. Paolo Guerrero had briefly given Peru hope when he equalised from the penalty spot minutes before Jesus struck. Jesus was shown a second yellow with 20 minutes left but Richarlison’s late penalty sealed the win. Victory will have been a huge relief for Jesus, who was in tears when he was sent off, kicking a water bottle…
Pressure group Dynamic Youth Movement of Ghana (DYMOG) has petitioned the head of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) “to investigate and establish all material facts that concern the construction of a new 450-seater parliamentary chamber block”. According to DYMOG, there are inconsistencies with regard to remarks made by key stakeholders concerning the project. The youth group is convinced the Public Procurement Act, 2016, Act 914, may have been breached in the appointment of Adjaye and Associates as consultants for the project. The group explained in the petition signed by its Executive Convener, Edward Tuttor, that Speaker…
The United States won the Women’s World Cup for a record fourth time as they eventually overpowered the Netherlands in Lyon. Megan Rapinoe’s penalty and Rose Lavelle’s fine run and finish gave the defending champions victory in the second half, after resilient first-half defending from the Dutch. Veteran winger Rapinoe’s calmly-slotted opener came from a spot-kick awarded after a video assistant referee (VAR) review, at the end of a tournament in which the system has been a major talking point. Barcelona defender Stefanie van der Gragt’s high boot caught USA striker Alex Morgan and French referee Stephanie Frappart pointed to…

Algeria made a remarkable qualification to the quarter-finals of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations after beating Guinea 3-0 in the Round of 16 on Sunday. Not only did that make them bear the torch of North African hopes in the knock-out stage, aside Tunisia, but the Desert Foxes also became the only side yet to concede at the tournament. Goals from Youcef Belaili, Riyad Mahrez and Adam Ounas were enough to sink the Syli Nationale and broke the jinx of a third-placed team pulling a shocker over group toppers. Before Sunday’s Round of 16 tie played at 30 June…
Debutants Madagascar secured a historic quarter-final qualification in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday after beating former winners DR Congo 4-2 on penalties in the Round of 16. The Malagasy had led twice during normal play but the Congolese drew level on both occasions. But luck ran out for the Leopards as Barea beat them on penalties after no goals were scored in extra time. It was a cagey encounter for the two sides as the balances tilted in favour of the Congolese despite finishing third in Group A behind Egypt and Uganda. With less experience in a…
