Kevin Gameiro and Rodrigo scored as a valiant Valencia beat La Liga champions Barcelona to win the Copa del Rey. Ernesto Valverde’s men said in the build-up that a win would help ease some of the pain of the Champions League loss to Liverpool, but they were sub-par again, in the Seville heat. French forward Gameiro fired in a superb strike to give Valencia the lead before Rodrigo headed in the second. Lionel Messi’s 73rd-minute strike gave Barca hope but they fell short. After the match, Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu backed Valverde to continue at the Nou Camp. “I’ve…
Former President Jerry John Rawlings on Saturday morning joined cadres and members of the general public to plant trees along the island separating the road between the Ghana Standards Board traffic lights and the Legon traffic lights. The former president, who planted the first tree, urged Ghanaians to plant the theme of the June 4 celebrations – Developing a National Character for Sustainable Good Governance – in their hearts. “Ladies and gentlemen, as we commemorate this historic event, with a tree planting exercise I sincerely pray that the theme for this event will also be planted in our hearts,” the…

The National Identification Authority (NIA) says it is unable to grant the request to extend its mass registration exercise in the Accra West Zone. The exercise in the Zone ends on Saturday, May 25. According to the Authority, extending the exercise as widely demanded will “adversely affect the published national roll-out strategy”. Most residents in the Zone – made up of 12 assemblies – could not register since the exercise began on Monday, April 29. But a press release issued by NIA’s Head of Corporate Affairs, ACI Francis Palmdeti, said all residents who could not register “will be able to…
The Spokesperson of the board of Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMAs), Francis Doku, says the indefinite ban imposed on Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy does not stop them from buying tickets to watch like fans. He said no one will prevent them if they do so. Mr Doku, who is also Head of Media General Digital, stressed that the ban is as it was spelt out by Amandzeba Nat Brew at the Swiss Alisa Hotel in Accra on Thursday, May 23. The VGMA board, on that day, declared the two artistes as ineligible for nomination, selection and performing at future VGMAs.…
Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has described the suit filed by the Special Prosecutor against Member of Parliament for Bawku Central Constituency Mahama Ayariga as petty. According to him, the Office of the Special Prosecutor was set up to investigate “grand corruption” in order to allow existing anti-graft agencies to deal with “small” cases. Lawyer Kpebu expressed this opinion on TV3/3FM’s The Key Points on Saturday, May 25. His opinion comes in the wake of Martin Alamisi Amidu’s first case of corruption filed at an Accra High Court against tax evasion claims leveled against the former minister of state. Special…

The race to become the next Conservative Party leader has begun, following Theresa May’s announcement that she will step down next month. Health Secretary Matt Hancock is the fifth Tory to enter the race. He told the BBC that delivering Brexit was “mission critical” and Mrs May’s successor must be more “brutally honest” about the “trade-offs” required to get a deal through Parliament. The leadership contest will determine who is the UK’s next prime minister. Party bosses expect a new leader to be chosen by the end of July. Mrs May confirmed on Friday that she will resign as party…
Will anyone fight for an award if it weren’t worth the fight? This year’s VGMA awards have clearly revealed the value and prestige associated with it. Have you wondered how such a prestigious award comes to life? Well, it definitely begins from the ‘blackboard”. May I introduce the creative mind behind this year’s masterpiece. The 2019 VGMA award was designed by Nobert Fosu, a Communication Design graduate student from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). He completed in 2009-2013. He’s the current CEO of Visual Dummy GH, a firm that deals in video editing, animation and directing…
Gregory Afoko, who is standing trial for the 2015 murder of New Patriotic Party’s then Upper East Region Chairman Adams Mahama, has written to Amnesty International to save him from human right abuses. According to the letter written by Robert Atong Asekabta on behalf of the Ayieta Family to which Afoko belongs, the life of the accused is in danger and, therefore, they need the international human rights organisation’s support. “We believe even condemned prisoners have some rights. “Gregory [Afoko] has not been convicted of any crime, he has only been charged with committing a crime which has not been…
