Health workers in the Democratic Republic of Congo are to begin an immunisation campaign in an attempt to halt the spread of the deadly Ebola virus. The experimental vaccine proved effective when used in limited trials during the epidemic which struck West Africa in 2014-16. At least 25 people are believed to have died in the current outbreak. Health workers will be among the first to receive the vaccine on Monday. What is Ebola? It is an infectious illness that causes internal bleeding and often proves fatal. It can spread rapidly through contact with small amounts of bodily fluid, and…
Janet Jackson made her stance on the #MeToo movement clear as she won the Icon prize at the Billboard awards. “I believe that, for all of our challenges, we live at a glorious moment in history,” she said. “At long last, women have made it clear that we will no longer be controlled, manipulated, or abused. “I stand with those women and with those men equally outraged by discrimination, who support us in heart and mind.” The singer, whose 1986 breakthrough album Control, dealt with themes of feminism and taking charge of her own identity, has previously sung about domestic…
The Ghana Health Service (GHS) says reports that health authorities are suppressing news of cases of Ebola in the country are false. There were recent reports – just like in the past – that Ebola cases have been recorded in Ghana in the face of the recent outbreak in DR Congo and the authorities are suppressing broadcast. “We want to state emphatically that the report is false and misleading and that there is no such incidence of Ebola in Ghana,” a statement signed by Director-General Anthony Nsiah-Asare on Monday said. “Ebola is a highly infectious condition such that when there…
Exercising four to five times a week is necessary to stop the main arteries to the heart from stiffening up, research suggests. Two or three exercise sessions a week kept only some arteries healthy, a study of 100 people in their 60s found. The researchers said any form of exercise reduced the risk of heart problems. But the right amount of exercise at the right time in life could reverse the ageing of the heart and blood vessels. The study, published in The Journal of Physiology, looked at participants’ exercise history throughout their lives and measured the stiffness of their…
Goals from Mohammed Kudus and Ibrahim Sadiq ensured that the Black Satellites booked a place in the final round of qualification for the 2019 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations. The Satellites had secured a goalless draw in the first leg and, so, booked a 2-0 aggregate win over their Algerian counterparts on Sunday. The match was played at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium. Ghana will next face Benin in the final round of qualifers. The Beninois saw off The Gambia 3-2 on aggregate to qualify. Ghana will host the first leg before travelling to Cotonou for the second leg, both…
The US Department of Justice will investigate whether FBI agents spied on President Donald Trump’s 2016 election campaign for “inappropriate purposes”. In a tweet, Mr Trump said he wanted to know whether his predecessor’s administration ordered such a move. The call comes after US media reports suggesting the FBI had an informant meeting campaign aides. US Deputy Attorney-General Rod Rosenstein said action would be taken if any infiltration was found. “If anyone did infiltrate or surveil participants in a presidential campaign for inappropriate purposes, we need to know about it and take appropriate action,” Mr Rosenstein said in a statement.…
The Royal Family has thanked those who travelled to Windsor for the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Thousands of people lined the streets to see the couple on their big day, with many more watching the ceremony on television around the globe. The wedding celebrations ended with a black-tie dinner and fireworks display at Frogmore House, near Windsor Castle. Two hundred of Meghan and Harry’s closest friends and family attended the event held by Prince Charles. The couple are not expected to leave for their honeymoon immediately, choosing instead to remain in the UK before taking a break.…
The mayor of Greece’s second-largest city Thessaloniki has been treated in hospital after being beaten up by about a dozen people, officials say. Yiannis Boutaris, 75, was kicked in the head and legs and beaten with bottles by a group of nationalists angry over his appearance at a remembrance event. The mayor, who is known for his anti-nationalist views, was attending a ceremony to mark the killing of ethnic Greeks by Turks in World War One. Politicians have condemned the attack. A dozen people approached Mr Boutaris demanding he leave a flag-lowering ceremony in Thessaloniki on Saturday to mark what…
School authorities at Nkenkaasu Senior High School have lamented the lack of infrastructure at the school to meet the growing demands of students. Headmaster Francis Yata says the absence of a library facility and other infrastructure is having a negative toll on academic activities in the school. The school was absorbed by the government in 2010 but it is yet to benefit from any infrastructure development from government. The Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) has for the past eight years supported the school with some infrastructure such as classroom and dormitory blocks. But Mr Yata notes the current infrastructure is inadequate. “Our…
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has stressed that by the end of his first term of office in 2020, his political opponents would have no campaign message going into the elections, as he would have fulfilled the promises he made to the Ghanaian people in run-up to the 2016 elections. According to President Akufo-Addo, the same people who are saying his administration has done nothing over the last 16 months in office, are the same persons who, prior to the 2016 elections, stated that free SHS was not possible, and described as lies the pledge to restore the nursing and…
