Fifteen persons were arrested on Friday following disturbances around the Ho Central Mosque in the Volta Region capital. The disturbances were characterised by the firing of gunshots, leaving a number of residents around the mosque injured. It is unclear what the cause of the incident is but NewsfileGH gathers it may have to do with the selection of the next regional Chief Imam. A joint security force made up of the police and the military was called in to restore law and order. The incident has, however, left residents terrified as the tension can be felt in the area.

The Savannah Regional Police Command of the Ghana Police Service has arrested 27 suspects following a special Christmas Day operation. The operation was carried out in the regional capital, Damongo, Buipe and Bole. A number of items including live ammunitions was found on some of the suspects. Among the arrested were women, some of who had in possession dried leaves suspected to be Indian Hemp. They will be kept in police custody to be later arraigned before court.

The Libyan army chief has been killed in an air crash in Turkey, Libya’s prime minister has said. Gen Mohammed Ali Ahmed al-Haddad was on board a Falcon 50 aircraft flying out of the Turkish capital, Ankara, on Tuesday evening. He was killed along with four other military officials and three crew members. The Wildlife Division of the Forestry Commission at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) has arrested a passenger carrying dried shark fins meant for Mauritania. The 3,967 shark fins with a total weight of 488kg were seized at the Swissport Cargo Center. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has announced a suspension of the scheduled rollout of new licence plates from 2026. The Authority had scheduled Friday, January 2, 2026 to roll out the new number plates, which will have Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). DVLA had, therefore, ensured that Parliament amended the Road Traffic Act, 2004 (Act 683).
