The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has decided to shut down the Accra Desalination Plant in a bid to “resolve the challenges”. According to the Company, the shutdown took effect January 1, 2018. “Management has as a result made alternative arrangements to serve the supply area from the Accra and Tema Booster Stations,” a statement issued by Head of Public Relations Stanley Martey said. The Plant, until the decision to shut down, served Teshie, Nungua and surrounding areas including Sakumono, Lashibi, Baatsona and GREDA and Regimanuel estates. Vice Chairman of the Ghana Private Road Transport Unit (GPRTU) Robert Sarbah has served notice that transport fares would be hiked this year. He says the main determinant has been the increase in prices of spare parts. “We do not increase lorry fares in isolation,” he observed. “We do so in collaboration with the other transport operators like PROTEA before we even go to the Ministry of Transport for confirmation or otherwise.” He said those steps are being taken. The Israeli government has issued a notice for thousands of African migrants to leave the country or face imprisonment. The migrants will be given up to $3,500 (£2,600) for leaving within the next 90 days. They will be given the option of going to their home country or third countries. If they do not leave, the Israeli authorities have threatened that they will start jailing them from April. The UN refugee agency said the controversial plan violated international and Israeli laws. The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) says there will be nothing new with the coming into force of the Office of the Special Prosecutor’s Act, which was given presidential assent on Tuesday. According to the National Secretary of the party, Murtala Mohammed, the partiality of the Attorney General in doing the bidding of incumbent governments will be the same with the Special Prosecutor. The early completion of most developmental projects qualified the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) to access the Universal Development Goal (UDG) supplementary fund in 2017. Chief Executive of the Assembly Osei Assibey Antwi says the grant of $445,787 was invested in schools and other infrastructural development projects. The supplementary UDG funds were invested in the furnishing of one community library and procurement of 2,300 dual desks, 1,200 sets of student tables and chairs and 130 sets of teacher tables and chairs, among others.
