The Northern Regional Police Command was on Thursday, April 27 forced to grant bail to 11 supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Sagnerigu Constituency who were picked up on the evening of Wednesday for engaging in unlawful demonstration. The 11 were among some supporters who burnt car tyres at the Tamale Sports Stadium Roundabout in protest against President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s nominee of Chief Executive for the Sagnerigu District. Sixty-nine illegal mining machines have been confiscated and destroyed by an anti-galamsey taskforce in Dunkwa-on-Offin, Central Region. The ‘Stop Galamsey Operation’ Taskforce at Dunkwa-On-Offin in the Central Region destroyed 19 machines on Tuesday and followed up with 50 machines on Wednesday. The machines were used by illegal miners operating on River Offin, which serves as the major source of water for residents in the Upper Denkyira East District. Turkey’s police force has suspended more than 9,000 officers over alleged links to the US-based Islamic preacher Fethullah Gulen. It said the action had been taken on the grounds of national security. President Tayyip Erdogan accuses Mr Gulen of instigating a failed coup against him last July – a charge the cleric denies. Earlier, authorities detained more than 1,000 people in the latest operation against alleged Gulen supporters. The Ghana Internet Service Providers Association (GISPA) has urged all domestic corporate businesses and academic institutions to embrace the Ghana Internet eXchange (GIX) by connecting their traffic to it since it will beat down cost and increase the value of data consumption. GISPA noted that currently only 25 per cent of local traffic is exchanged in Ghana and called on the National Communications Authority (NCA) to ensure that it is mandatory for all the telcos to direct about 90 per cent of local traffic through the GIX. One person died on the spot while three others sustained serious injuries on Thursday morning when a Toyota Camry skidded off the Mallam Junction stretch of the N1 highway unto the main Mallam-Kasoa road. The injured were sent to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for treatment while the deceased was also sent to the morgue of the same hospital. A faulty traffic light near Niagara Hotel at Adabraka in Accra caused accidents in the early hours of Thursday. Two vehicles, a Honda Civic with registration number GC 4327-12 and a Sprinter commercial vehicle with registration number GE 8138-14 collided at the traffic intersection in a struggle to beat the confusion. A suspected “coup plotter” has been arrested in South Africa for planning to assassinate nearly 19 people – including government ministers, officials of state-owned firms and prominent citizens, the elite Hawks police unit has said.  The 23-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday following undercover operations in the capital, Pretoria, and the main commerrcial city, Johannesburg, Hawks spokesman Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said.
