Members of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) have called off their strike barely 24 hours after it began. With numerous cases of lecturers not turning up, the strike did not have any significant effect of academics. It was called off after the intervention of Vice Chancellors Ghana (VCG) following a closed-door meeting with UTAG’s leadership. The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has scheduled a solidarity march in Accra to mark this year’s Founder’s Day on Thursday. September 21 has been celebrated since 2009 – when the NDC returned to power – as a public holiday to mark the birth of Ghana’s first president, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah. Swiss prosecutors are investigating why tens of thousands of euros were flushed down toilets in Geneva. The €500 (£440; $600) notes were cut up and found in the toilets of a branch of the bank UBS and in three nearby restaurants. Thousands of francs have reportedly been spent on plumbing repairs to unclog the surrounding pipes. The high-value euro notes are due to be withdrawn in 2018 over fears they facilitate illegal activities. North Korea has warned that more sanctions and pressure will only make it accelerate its nuclear programme. In a strongly worded statement, Pyongyang called new UN sanctions “the most vicious, unethical and inhumane act of hostility”. The Sekyere East District Assembly in the Ashanti Region is partnering a private company, N-D Eco Limited, to establish a $50 million animal husbandry for the production of meat, milk, leather and other products. The project will be implemented under the government’s flagship industrialization initiative dubbed One-District-One-Factory (1D1F).
