Tiger Woods says he “hasn’t felt this good in years” after having a fourth operation on his back, but added he will not “hurry” to return to golf. America’s 14-time major champion, 41, came back after 15 months out injured in December, but has not played since his back problems recurred in February. Plans to compete at Augusta in April – on the 20th anniversary of his first Masters win – had to be abandoned. “I want to play professional golf again but I’m not looking ahead,” he said. “I can’t twist for another two and a half to three…
Manchester City and Manchester United have jointly pledged £1m to an emergency fund set up to support the victims of Monday’s attack in the city. The fund was set up in the wake of the suicide bomb attack at Manchester Arena which killed 22 people and injured 64. “It is right that we present a unified response to this tragedy,” said Ed Woodward, United’s executive chairman. “We have been humbled by the strength and solidarity shown by Manchester,” said City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak. “The hope of both our clubs is that our donation will go some small way to…
Ghana and Sierra Leone have agreed to ratify the agreement for co-operation between their two countries, so as to provide the legal framework for addressing their trade and investment concerns. Despite the good relations that exist between the two countries, there is no framework for co-operation to guide these relations, with this development hampering the deepening of bilateral ties and co-operation amongst the two countries. To this end, President Akufo-Addo has assured that “I will pursue this matter with my Parliament to ensure the ratification of this Agreement”, an agreement which was signed between the two countries on 19th December,…
Angry demonstrators in Brasilia have started a fire inside the ministry of agriculture and have damaged several other ministerial buildings. Brazilian authorities estimate around 35,000 are marching in the capital. Troops are being deployed to defend government buildings and there is a heavy police presence on the streets. Protesters are demanding the resignation of President Michel Temer, fresh elections, and for economic reform plans to be withdrawn. Mr Temer has faced new corruption allegations in the last week, and is facing growing pressure to step down. According to reports, several ministries are being evacuated because of the protests – but…
Ghana’s Black Starlets beat Niger 6-5 on penalties to make it to the final of the ongoing Africa U-17 Cup of Nations in Gabon. Niger had held the Starlets to a goalless draw in regulation time at Stade de Port-Gentil after they were pinned to their half for almost the entire duration of the game. Gabriel Leveh had the early opportunity of the game but failed to beat Nigerien goalie Moussa Hima, who put up a sterling performance on the day, creating a stumbling block between his goal and the Starlets’ attack. Leading goalscorer Eric Ayiah also came close to…
I sent e-mails to two prominent journalists to do a story about the frustrations of the Ghanaian passport holder in travelling within Africa and the world. I thought they would tell my story for me. I have waited for weeks but I have not received even the courtesy of acknowledgement of mail. Remembering the citizen and not spectator call by our strong-willed President, I thought I should write my own story and see if someone may listen and act on it sooner on behalf of the hundreds of Ghanaians who may be going through comparable situation. I am a citizen…
The Member of Parliament for Adaklu Constituency in the Volta Region, Kwame Governs Agbodza, says it is dangerous for the Lands and Natural Resources Minister to accuse some personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) of protecting illegal gold mining concessions in some parts of the country, especially in the Ashanti Region. Mr. Agbodza said the military is the most disciplined and well-behaved security service in the country, so such comment could be a disgrace to the GAF and also lose confidence the people of Ghana have in them. The Lands and Natural Resources Minister, John Peter Amewu, had alleged on…
Former Member of Parliament for Asunafo South Constituency George Boakye is seeking clarification from the British High Commission over a ‘visa fraud’ case he is cited in. According to the ex-New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP, he was not engaged in any fraudulent act as it appears painted in the letter written by British High Commissioner Jon Benjamin to the Speaker of Parliament. Speaking in an interview on 3FM, lawyer for the former MP Kwabena Asare Atuah said an earlier letter written to the High Commission has since not been responded to. “We will write to them again so they clarify…
The Accra Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service has expressed concerns about the rising cases of criminals on motor bikes robbing unsuspecting victims at gun point. In a release on Wednesday, May 24, the Command drew attention of the public to such incidences, saying they “have observed that these criminals, who are usually two on a motorbike, closely monitor their targets (especially those returning from banks and financial facilities) from a distance, attack and rob them of their valuables amidst firing”. The Command, therefore, asked the public to be extra vigilant of motor riders, who hover around banking areas,…
