Amazon is spending millions of dollars designing and constructing a homeless shelter in the heart of downtown Seattle. The online retail giant partnered with the non-profit Mary’s Place to transform one of its urban campuses into a home for the less fortunate, which will open in 2020 and house 275 people per night. The Ghana Education Service (GES) has pushed back the resumption date for senior high school students currently on mid-term holidays. The students were to return to school on Tuesday, November 12, but the GES said it has extended the date by three more days. “Students are expected to return over the weekend [November 15, 2019] to ensure that full academic work resumes on Monday, November 18 2019” the GES said in a statement to all regional directors of education in the country. Residents of Salaga and its adjoining communities will soon be saved the trouble of having to walk long distances in such of water. This follows the rehabilitation and expansion works on the Salaga water system after its takeover by Ghana Water Company Limited. The company has since assured residents the project will be completed by January 2020. The Salaga water system was constructed in 1962 but did not receive any major rehabilitation until 2017. Nigeria’s state security service says it is still detaining journalist Omoyele Sowore – who is facing treason charges – despite him being granted bail, because nobody came to claim him. But Sahara Reporters, the news website Mr Sowore founded, reported that his lawyers were denied access when attempting to collect him. Mr Sowore was arrested in August after calling for a revolution. The Environmental Service Providers Association (ESPA) and the Coalition of NGO’s in Water and Sanitation (Coniwas) want government to address the low charges for managing solid waste in the country. Ghana charges an average 10 dollars in managing a tonne of municipal solid waste, a charge that is comparatively lower than the World Bank recommended fee of 30 dollars.
