Ghanaian authorities have continued their efforts to clean up the country’s financial sector following a fresh round of financial institution closures. In mid-August the Bank of Ghana (BoG) announced it had revoked the licences of 23 savings and loans companies, citing their continued insolvency despite government attempts to encourage recapitalisation. The BoG also revoked the licences of two non-bank financial institutions, Express Funds International and Ghana Leasing, which have been insolvent and inactive for a number of years. The Ghana National Gas Company Limited has awarded scholarships to 45 needy but brilliant students in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality in the Western Region to continue their tertiary level education. The scholarship is part of efforts by the Ghana Gas National Company to demystify misconceptions about the gas industry particularly among students at all levels. The University of Ghana has dismissed reports that it has suspended investigations into the ‘sex for grades’ saga. According to the Director of Public Affairs of the University, a five-member fact-finding committee has been set up to receive complaints from victims and non-victims. Speaking on TV3’s Midday Live on Thursday, October 17, Stella Amoa said the information out there that investigations have been suspended “is incorrect”. The Ghana Chamber of Mines has launched a two-million dollar Tertiary Education Fund to support the development of high caliber of mining professionals and global leaders in the sustainable exploitation and management of natural resources. The Fund, which will be administered in phases, would see producing member companies of the Chamber contributing 400,000 US dollars annually for five years to support tertiary education giving priority to the University of Mines and Technology (UmaT).
