The new 5 cedis note issued by the Bank of Ghana to celebrate its 60th anniversary will be in circulation by 7th march, that’s according to the central bank. The note is being introduced as part of the Bank of Ghana’s 60th anniversary, which falls on March 4, this year. The GH¢5 cedi denomination will be a legal tender as well as a collector’s item. The Textile and Garment Workers Union of the Ghana Trades Union Congress (TUC) is set to demonstrate on 9th March, 2017 against the government on the 2017 budget presented by the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta on Thursday. The Police in Kumasi have arrested three persons in connection with a bloody clash between some supporters of the New Patriotic Party and the National Democratic Congress over the management of a lorry terminal. The Tamale lorry station at Alabar in Kumasi where the incident happened Thursday has temporarily been shutdown to avert a possible reprisal attacks. The Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) is not happy that the government’s 2017 budget was silent on realistic measures to reduce the cost of electricity the country. Former Deputy Finance Minister Ato Forson has condemned the abolishment of import duties on spare parts, claiming the move will soon make the country a dumping ground for over-aged vehicles and parts. According to him, the National Democratic Congress government did not introduce such taxes to only generate revenue but also check the importation of over-aged vehicles into the country. The Center for Democratic Development Ghana (CDD) has asked the Council of State members to work hard to justify the monthly GHC13,000 salary for each member. The CDD-Ghana wants the Council to break with the past, which has triggered calls for the total scrap of the advisory and consultative Council, adding “the Council has to live up to its potential as a tool of horizontal accountability in Ghana’s democratic politics”. The Northern Regional representative of the Council of State, Professor Bog-Naa Yakubu Nantogmah has urged the government to only create dams in strategic locations in each of the three northern regions instead of creating one dam in each community as proposed.
