The Gambia’s Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) chief has gone into hiding, his family has told the BBC. There are unconfirmed reports that Alieu Momar Njai, who announced Yahya Jammeh’s defeat in the polls last month, has fled the country. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority [DVLA] in the Northern Region has revealed plans to roll out mobile inspection of cars, tricycles and motorbikes with the view to process them for registration.  The move is to ease the process of vehicle registration to enable the authority meet its 2017 revenue target of GHC2.15 million. Two years after the building that houses the male inmates of New Life Nungua Children’s Home got burnt, efforts by the authorities to put up a new building for them has delayed due to lack of funds. As a result, the male inmates are using only two single room apartment which was rented by the authorities nearby leading to overcrowding. The Ghana Immigration Service says the revision of the Service’s law to allow personnel to handle weapons in the discharge of its duty would make enforcement and patrol activities more effective. Until the passage of the Immigration Service Act 2016, personnel of the Service were not allowed to carry weapons in the discharge of their duties.
