A Sudanese court has sentenced 29 intelligence officers to death for the torture and killing of a teacher. Ahmad al-Khair, 36, died in custody in February following his arrest for taking part in protests against then President Omar al-Bashir’s government. These are the first sentences handed down over the crackdown on pro-democracy activists in the months before Bashir was toppled in April. The prosecution said the death sentences were a just punishment. The Ghana Prisons Service has urged Ghanaians to remember persons who are languishing in jail for various offences across the country, and send them Christmas presents for them to feel loved in the festive season. “They still remain our own and so we should endeavour to make them feel loved by visiting them with gifts reminiscent of the season,” a Christmas message from the Prisons PR Unit pleaded. The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) on Monday disconnected power supply to the Volta Aluminum Company Limited (VALCO). This follows the failure of the VALCO to settle over US$30million outstanding debt to the power transmitter, GRIDCo said in a statement on Monday. It said the decision was made by the management of GRIDCo after several attempts to get VALCO to honour its payment obligations failed.
