The UK and US considered a navy-backed oil embargo against Nigeria, following the 1995 execution of writer and activist Ken Saro-Wiwa, a document released by the UK government reveals. Saro-Wiwa and eight other campaigners from the Ogoni ethnic group were hanged on 10 November 1995. Six executives of Ghana Union Movement (GUM) party have been arrested for allegedly breaching peace and passing eccentric comments against the chiefs and people of Kwaman in the Agona West Constituency. The arrest followed a protracted misunderstanding between the Founder and Leader of GUM, Osofo Kyereaboso, and the traditional rulers of Kwaman seething since 2017. A Chinese national has allegedly shot five Ghanaians who were working for him on Monday. The suspect, Liu Xuejian aged 47 is believed to have shot his staff with a pump action gun. Africa’s largest mobile operator MTN says it is reviewing allegations that it paid protection money to militant Islamist groups in Afghanistan. The allegations, made in a legal complaint filed in a US federal court on Friday, say the firm violated US anti-terrorism laws. It was filed on behalf of families of US citizens killed in attacks in Afghanistan. Five other companies were also named in the filing.
