The Ghana Armed Forces has officially handed the cleared right-of-way for the Accra-Kumasi Expressway project to President John Dramani Mahama.
This marks the official completion of the project undertaken by the military in preparations for the construction of the 175.6-kilometre highway.
A ceremony took place at Ejisu Kwaso in the Ashanti Region on Monday, September 14 to hand over the project to government.
The military cleared 175.6 kilometres of the proposed route in 19 weeks, one week ahead of the original 20-week schedule.
The proposed expressway will be a six-lane, access-controlled highway linking Ghana’s two largest cities of Accra and Kumasi.
When completed, the highway is expected to cut travel time between the two cities from about five to six hours to roughly two hours, while easing congestion, improving road safety and reducing transport costs.
The project is a flagship component of the government’s Big Push Infrastructure Programme.
