Some indigenes of Komenda Edina Eguafo Abrim (K.E.E.A ) municipality of the Central Region have formed a Covid-19 protection committee in a move to prevent or minimize a possible coronavirus case in the area.
It is made up of businessmen, pharmacists, medical doctors, journalists, fisher folks, security personnel, teachers and members of Elmina Board of Trade.
The committee has purchased some personal protective equipment for hospitals in the municipality, and erected some mini health tents designed to run random screening of the indigenes and visitors to the area.
An ultra-modern ambulance has also been dedicated to the committee by Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom to be used purposely for Covid-19 cases.
One of the coordinators Mr. Godwin Kenneth Anani described initiative as a proactive measure designed to inform and educate people on the Covid-19 pandemic which has infected 1,042 people in Ghana and killed nine of them.
He explained that considering the closeness of the indigenes to the coast and the market centers in the municipality operate, should a single case be recorded, controlling it will be very difficult.
On the back of that, he underscored the need to intensify education through local radio stations, TV stations and the information centers.
For his part, the medical superintendent at Elmina Polyclinic Dr. Felix Darbbey applauded the effort by the team, noting their interventions make the fight against the virus a lot easier owing to its proactive and reactive measures.
He cautioned indigenes against spreading fake information about Covid-19, indicating that it poses danger health facilities, the people and the country at large.
Dr Darbbey said such fake news turn to provoke fear and anger in the people and discourages people from testing for the virus.
With a single case recorded so far in the Central Region, it is the expectation of the committee that samples of contacts traced will prove negative as they work harder to intensify their actions against the virus.
