A Political Science Lecturer at the Methodist University, Dr. Osei Bonsu, has described as baseless and illogical the position taken by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in kicking against the Electoral Commission’s resolution to compile a new voter register for the December 7 polls.
Dr Bonsu noted that Ghana is treasured globally because of smooth elections hence he describedthe position of the NDC in counterattacking the EC as needless.
Speaking in an interview on Yensempa on Onua FM, the Political Science lecturer maintained that the EC is a self-governing institution mandated by law in managing electoral processes in Ghana.
As a result, its decisions cannot be undermined by any individual or group of people.
He told host Nana Yaw Opare that politics is a contest of ideas thus it is not obligatory on the EC to go by the position of one party against the masses in conducting an election.
“I believe the debate by the NDC is needless especially looking at how far we have come as a country in democracy,” Dr Bonsu said.
“The constitution also mandates the EC and we must allow them deliver effectively.”
He chided NDC over their inconsistency in their protest, challenging them to point out one key reason instead of playing double standards in resisting the intended exercise.
Dr. Osei Bonsu indicated that the NDC over the period has been using the Covid-19 pandemic and time constraints as excuses but have now turned around to debate on EC’s rejection of the existing voter ID card as a required document for the registration.
He maintained that the voter ID card and birth certificates have never been a requirement for registration since the inception of the 4th Republic but rather been used previously as identity hence the debate by the leading opposition party is an illogic and fallacy.
He whittled down the argument by the NDC that the EC wants to compile a new register to rig the 2020 elections for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and called on the general public to discredit such fallacies.
