President Nana Addo Dankwa-Akufo says government will soon pass a legislation to redefine basic education in the country to include senior high school.

The President disclosed this while presenting the 2019 State of the Nation Address on Thursday, February 21.

He expressed delight over current reforms in the education sector, which he says provides a bright future for the young in the country.

“It warms my heart that we are now able to say that education in the public sector is free from Kindergarten to Senior High School, and that this year, a legislation would be passed to redefine Basic education to include Senior High School.”

According to the president, government through the Ghana Education Service is also set to introduce a new curriculum at the primary school level to focus more on harnessing the creativity of pupils.

“In September 2019, a new standard-based curriculum will be rolled out from kindergarten to Class 6 in primary schools. This curriculum will focus on making Ghanaian children confident, innovative creative-thinking, digitally-literate, well-rounded, patriotic citizens.

“Mathematics, Science, Reading, Writing and Creativity are therefore at the heart of this new curriculum,” President Akufo-Addo stated.

He also said government is focused on churning out technology-savvy graduates to match up to standards around the world; hence, there are measures to place that at the center of education in the country.

“The importance of Science, Technology and Innovation has led me to appoint a Presidential Advisory Council on Science and Technology to advise the President on how to infuse the application of science and technology in the development of our nation…”

The President also made mention of the building of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Centres into basic education.

He also said some 10 state-of-the art Technical and Vocational Educational (TVET) Training Centres will be constructed to boost vocational training in the country.
