The delegates being addressed by the NPP constituency chairman for Amasaman

Delegates of the New Patriotic Party at the Amasaman constituency in the Greater Accra region are angry over a last minute decision of the party to pull the breaks on today’s parliamentary primary in the constituency.

Rockson Adu Boahene who was excluded from the polls after he was allegedly cleared to contest primary, secured an interim injunction to stop the EC and the party from going ahead with the conduct of the polls in the constituency.

Four persons – Clement Nii Lamptey Wilkinson, Muriel Nana Oye Coffie-Agoe, Isaac Kwaku Minta Sackey and Akwasi Owusu Afrifa-Mensah – are contesting the primary

Despite the restraining order, the party had prepared the event grounds for the primary to commence but the constituency chairman, Michael kojo Asante, at the last hour informed the hundreds of delegates at the centre that the poll has been called off.

He told the delegates he had just been served with a copy of the court order, which he showed, for which reason he cannot allow the conduct of the primary in the constituency, our correspondent Stanley Blewu reported.

The municipal returning officer of the Electoral Commission however stated the EC was unaware of such restraining order for which reason they will go ahead with the polls.

But the constituency chairman insisted the election cannot go on as even the NPP Director of Election at the party headquarters has been served with the injunction by Mr Adu Boahene.

“There is possibility of chaos. The delegates are furious and have vowed not to leave the grounds” Stanley reported.

According to our correspondent, the Amasaman Police was called in and they have asked delegates to vacate the premises since the election is not taking place.

The delegates are unwilling to leave the grounds

“They are expected to start leaving,” our correspondent reported.

Put my name on the ballot box

A writ issued at the High Court, Mr Adu Baohene contended that he has not received a response from the party despite his appeal of the decision to exclude his name from the final notice of poll in accordance with the party’s election structures.

In view of that, he wants the court to stop the party, its agents and assigns from going ahead with the election in the constituency.

Also, he is praying the High Court to declare him a qualified candidate to contest the Amasaman constituency parliamentary primary and an order directing the party to include him as a candidate.
