A trailer hauling a fully loaded 20 feet container has struck the concrete beams on the Ashaiman Interchange causing cracks underneath the bridge at the Tema-Accra stretch of the busy motorway.
It is unclear what caused the Maersk branded trailer, which was moving towards Accra, to hit the beams, but it is believed to have been caused by the decoupling of the trailer head just under the interchange.
As at 6:00 a.m. Wednesday, the head of the truck had been moved from the scene. The tip of the trailer was however hooked up to the bridge causing the container to tilt to the back of the trailer in a dangerous manner.
The impact of the hit caused some concrete to fall from the beams onto the trailer and the road, suggesting the could be more damage to the interchange than can physically be seen.
Police officers at the scene could not give details on the accident at the time.
The accident, which happened in the outer lane, caused gridlock on the Accra-Tema stretch of the motorway.
The vehicular traffic from the scene caused a spill over to the Tema roundabout area and the already traffic-prone Afienya and Prampram roads.
At about 9:30 a.m. a crane arrived at the scene to try and lift the container from the trailer to clear the road for smooth flow of traffic. But workers have since 1:00 p.m. not been able to removed the trailer.
