Some of the mechanised road sweepers unvielled by Zoomlion

Local Government and Rural Development Minister Hajia Alima Mahama has commended Zoomlion Ghana Limited for its latest move to tackle the country’s sanitation problem with the unveiling of mechanized street sweepers.

The waste management company last week deployed 10 mechanical road sweepers to be used across the various cities in the country to help achieve President Akufo-Addo’s vision of making Ghana a clean nation.

The company believes the deployment of over 500 additional waste trucks, construction of waste transfer stations in Achimota and Teshie, installation of mobile composting plants across the regions, provision of medical waste treatment plant, haulage and treatment of liquid waste, among other interventions are all geared towards making Ghana clean.

These interventions, the Local Government and Rural Development minister observed, would boost government’s efforts at making Ghana clean from filth, which has been one of the country’s biggest challenge over the years.

“I will hasten to commend Zoomlion Ghana Limited, our key private sector partner. Indeed, your outfit keeps springing up surprises to augment this government’s efforts and that is very commendable. We need more of your kind to completely nib in the bud the waste management menace facing this country,” Hajia Mahama said.

She said she expects Zoomlion Ghana Limited to effectively collaborate with all the metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies to ensure smooth deployment of the equipment in order to maximize the benefits for the people of Ghana.

Greater Accra Regional Minister, Ishmael Ashittey said the timing of the arrival of the sweepers was very appropriate because some of the major roads and ceremonial streets that have become a receiving ground for all types of waste will witness a facelift.

He said though there have been an increase in the number of people deployed to sweep these major streets, they are in most cases not clean, hence necessary to use mechanical sweepers.

Mr Ashittey advised Ghanaians to stop littering the environment for their own good as it is the cause of many diseases and floods.

Chief Executive of Accra Metropolitan Assembly Adjei Sowah warned perpetrators of environmental sanitation crimes will be arrested and prosecuted.

“AMA will leave no stone unturned to ensuring that the President, H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s vision of making Accra the cleanest city in Africa,” he said.

The AMA, he said, will continue to partner with Zoomlion and other sanitation entities to fight eliminate filth from the city.

He also commended Zoomlion for its proactiveness in dealing with the waste menace with different strategic approaches.

Executive Chairman of the Jospong Group of Companies and owner of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong catalogued a number of interventions the company has brought on board since the president started his vision.

He stated that the introduction of the sweepers was an effort that will also help Ghana to attain the stated objectives of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goal 6, which relates to the provision of clean water, sanitation and resiliency to disasters.

“It is in this direction that we in Ghana have been fortunate to receive a clarion visionary call from His Excellency the President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to purposefully work to ensure that Accra and indeed the entire country is transformed to attain environmental cleanliness,” he said.

He assured that Zoomlion continue to do everything possible within its capacity to push the president’s agenda of a clean Ghana to a successful end while urging other partners to join the fight against filth.
