Eighteen persons engaged in open defecation at various locations within the Cape Coast metropolis have been arrested by the police in the Central Region in a special operation to clamp down on criminals.

The operation saw the team of metro environmental officers and personnel from the Regional Police Command visit Bakaano, Ntsin, Amanful, Brofoyedru, Idan, Jubilee Park, Ola, London Bridge, Abura and Duako.

Several illegal structures harbouring suspected criminals in those areas were also demolished in the early morning operation.

Central Regional Police Public Relations officer, DSP Irene Obeng, said the suspects “are in police custody assisting in investigations” and that they will be put before court.

She said the operation formed part of measures put in place to end the activities of criminals in the region ahead of this year’s PANAFEST and Emancipation Day celebration in the region.

“[We] will continue to make it uncomfortable for criminals,” she assured.

Deputy Regional Commander DCOP E.A. Bediako who monitored the exercise congratulated the men for the successful operation, and for exhibiting good conduct to the admiration of residents in the affected areas.

He said the exercise will be conducted continuously at all crime prone areas including the beaches to make the metropolis a safe environment.
