2018 FIFA U-17 Women’s WC: We’re here for a mission – Black Maidens coach Evans Adotey

Ghana’s Black Maidens will play host nation Uruguay in the opening game of the 2018 FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup on Tuesday at the Estadio Charrúa in Montevideo.

Uruguay and the Maidens will raise the curtain on the sixth edition of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup with the first four matches featuring on Tuesday.

The Estadio Charrua in Montevideo will be the venue for both games in Group A, with New Zealand taking on tournament debutants Finland before the Uruguay-Ghana game.

Uruguay will be hoping to become the first host nation of a FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup to progress past the group stage.

Their first test will be against tournament regulars Ghana, who defeated them 5-0 in the group stage of the 2012 edition in Azerbaijan, a win which remains the Black Maidens’ biggest in their competition history.

Incredibly, Ghana’s Mumuni Fuseina will be appearing in her third U-17 Women’s World Cup, as she appeared at Costa Rica 2014 as a 13-year-old.

Ghana is the only African side to have ever reached the semi-finals of the U-17 Women’s World Cup, a feat they achieved at Azerbaijan 2012.

Head Coach Evans Adotey says the team’s mission is simple: to go past their previous success.

“This is Ghana’s sixth appearance in the tournament. In the first place, I will say we won bronze in 2012, and in Costa Rica 2014, we got to the knock out stage in the quarter finals. We followed up in 2016 in Jordan and were edged out in the quarter final stage again but this time in 2018, Ghana’s Black Maidens is coming to stay and play in the final that is my mission.”
