From 7:00am Thursday, thousands of eligible voters, including the aged in parts the country, have been voting in a historic referendum to decide whether the six proposed administrative regions should be created.
Consequent to a petition from some opinion and traditional leaders, government is seeking to create Ahafo, Bono East, North East, Savanna, Oti and Western North regions from the Brong Ahafo, Northern, Volta and Western regions.
Our correspondents report that the voting exercise has been peaceful without any major incident, despite fears of a possible mayhem in the Oti enclave where the MP for Krachie East Michael Gyato vowed to resist attempts by ‘outsiders’ to vote ‘No’ in the referendum.
Both the old and the young have defied the hazy harmattan to join queues to cast their vote.
For many of those our correspondents spoke to, their vote today is for development; a development that will ensure they have good roads, hospitals that are well-equipped with staff and medical supplies among others.
