Rev Owusu Bempa’s subordinate pastor chides GPCC over death prophecies

Rev. Owusu Bempah

The Resident Pastor for Glorious Word Power Church, Rev Ronnie Kofi Nyarko, has implored the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC) to pray to God to avert any calamity that he revealed to his senior pastor, Rev Owusu Bempa, instead of praying against him.

Rev Nyarko said God does not reveal prophecies for the nation to fight over them but to pray over them.

The resident pastor made the call while reacting to a statement from the GPCC that it had declared fasting and prayer against Rev Owusu Bempa over his prophecies on December 31.

The GPCC criticized the publicity of death prophecies on some prominent Ghanaians by some self-styled prophets.

The Council, which is an umbrella organization of over 200 Pentecostal and Charismatic Churches in Ghana, in a statement Thursday said persons who go public with doom prophecies are flouting the biblical doctrine.

“The Council wishes to admonish all those who claim to be speaking in the name of the Lord God Almighty through prophetic declarations to abide by the tenets of the Bible in making such declarations. It is the Council’s considered opinion that prophecies that concern individuals must be given to such individuals personally and privately, such as in the case of the prophet Isaiah and King Hezekiah, in order not to create fear and panic in the entire nation. It must be noted that whatever affects national figures, such as those whose deaths have been predicted has the potential to affect the stability of the entire nation,” the Council said in the release.

The statement comes on the heels of agitation by some youth who stormed and attacked Rev Isaac Owusu-Bempa’s church on Wednesday for predicting the death of the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Shaributu, in 2019.

The angry youth destroyed glass windows, chairs and some musical instruments at the South Odorkor Estate branch of the church.

Reacting to the statement by the GPCC on Onua FM’s Yen Sempa hosted by Bright Kwasi Asempa on Friday, Rev Nyarko said “fasting and prayers to end the prophecies or not? Or they are fasting that what he [Rev Owusu Bempa] said would not occur? God does not reveal prophecies for us to fight over”.

He added in local language Twi: “If we have any prayers, we should pray that all the prophecies will not come to pass but don’t pray against the one who prophesied. They should fast and pray against what Satan wants to do.

“The national prayer is very vital. It calls for national prayers and not chaos”.
