The Ghana chapter of Nairobi-based PLO Lumumba Foundation, which seeks to nurture young African leaders, imbibe in the youth with the spirit of Pan Africanism, among others has appointed Joseph Kobla Wemakor, an astute journalist and staunch human rights activist, as the Deputy Head of Media and Communication effective February 5, 2019.

Having been duly registered in 1990 as a company limited by guarantee, the PLO Lumumba Foundation was formed for the noble cause of assisting the needy and brilliant students to achieve their academic dreams; an idea nurtured by the founder, Prof Patrick Loch Otieno Lumumba, an astute Kenyan Lawyer and a loyal human rights advocate.

Joseph Wemakor is a prolific writer of no mean repute, a blogger and an ardent freelance online reporter on various news portals.

He also doubles as the Editor-In-Chief of Ghananewsone.com.

Mr. Wemakor’s quest to see issues of human rights abuses against women, girls and children resolved as an advocate and journalist has pushed him a step further to establish the Human Rights Reporters Ghana(HRRG), another Non-Governmental Organization(NGO) committed to ending all forms of human rights abuses against girls, women and children in Ghana and beyond.

Joseph’s committment in advocacy towards relieving the plight of female headporters (Kayayei) including the rights of children has contributed to improving lives in the country.

A cause he has been championing using his skills and knowledge to help shed light on issues affecting people to get the authorities respond to deal with these issues.

A typical example is the case of a 22-year-old Abudu Salah, a Kayoyo who obtained an excellent result of six A’s and two B’s in the 2018 West African Senior Schools Certificate Examinations (WASSCE). She couldn’t get help to go to school to see her dream of becoming a nurse in the future a reality due to lack of support.

Since her story was told by Joseph exactly three weeks ago, it had caught the attention of  philanthropists, individuals, corporate organizations, well-wishers and NGOs in Ghana and beyond including government who came to her rescue.

Joseph has a vast wealth of experience to bring to the table as the Deputy Head of Media and Communication at the PLO Lumumba Foundation, having worked as a media practitioner and a human rights activist for the past nine years with hosts of NGOs, corporate organizations, Governmental, International and UN Organizations in the country including the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC), UNFPA and the Purim Youth Development Platform(PAYDP) among others.

His responsibility among others will be to help the Foundation’s activities enjoy wide publicity via various media outlets and help establish a cordial partnering relationship with various media organizations with the aim of ensuring its goals and objectives are achieved.

Mr Wemakor believes the opportunity is an avenue for him to improve his knowledge and render his selfless service to the betterment of mankind.

In his acceptance letter, joyous Joseph wrote: “I’m very pleased to accept the position of Deputy Head of Media and Communication of your noble Foundation. Thanks for the opportunity to serve, I am eager to make very positive contribution to the foundation and to work with everyone in the foundation’s team towards attainment of its goals and objectives”.
