Member of Parliament for the Ningo Prampram Constituency Samuel Nartey George has hinted that he and the other victims of the January 31, 2019 Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election violence will file a suit against government over its decision not to implement the Emile Short Commission report.
The Commission of Inquiry was set up by government to look into the circumstances that led to the violence.
It has since presented its report to government but a White Paper subsequently issued rejected some of the recommendations.
Government claimed in the White Paper that the Commission failed to address the first term of reference, which was “to make a full, faithful and impartial inquiry into the circumstances of, and establish the facts leading to, the events and associated violence that occurred during the Ayawaso West Wuogon bye-election on the 31st day of January, 2019”.
Speaking at the first anniversary commemoration of the violence, Sam George said he and the other victims will not be cowed into silence.
“They had only one aim: To cause as much human damage as possible. They sought to sow the seeds of fear into us and to cower us using brute force.”
The event was attended by the former President, John Dramani Mahama as well as leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Sam George said President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his government thought the Commission of Inquiry will deliver a “white-wash” of the events.
“They were wrong.
“We appeared before the Commission and told the truth as we knew it and saw it and we backed it with irrefutable evidence.”
He said even forensic audits “exposed the lies” of the National Security.
For him, going to the courts will be the only way Akufo-Addo will be enjoined to implement the recommendations of the Commission.
“We are going to to sue the president for refusing to implement the recommendations from the white paper of the Short Commission.”
