The Volta Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has advised the general public, particularly the media, to be mindful of how they report and talk about the group that is agitating for the restoration of the Western Togoland as an independent state from Ghana.
REGSEC said the issue is a sensitive one which borders on the security of this nation so any reportage that would seek to inflame the passion of the issue will be detrimental to the nation.
The police administration on Sunday arrested eight leaders of the group.
They were planning to declare independence on Thursday, May 9, 2019.
The eight, led by their chairman, Charles Kormi Kudzodzi, also known as Papavi Hogbedetor, an octogenarian, were picked up in Ho by a combined team of armed police and military personnel and airlifted to Accra.
This is the second time members of the group have been arrested in a similar fashion.
They were charged two years ago for treason.
The Chairman of the REGSEC, Dr Archibald Yao Letsa, when contacted on the issue by Onua FM’s Yen Sempa on Tuesday explained that “it is a sensitive issue that we are dealing with because it borders on the security of this nation”.
“They were training about 200 people in the bush. They were recruiting and training young people in a ‘militia-style’ for them to form a core of their supposed country’s armed forces and police force,” he explained.
Dr. Letsa said “the whole night [Monday night] we were working. We did not sleep and because of this news, some of the operations were not successful and so we are not ready to talk about it now”.
