Supporters of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) converged at the premises of Radio Gold at Latebiokorshie to partake in a candlelight vigil in solidarity with the closure of pro-NDC stations Radio Gold and Radio XYZ.
The two Accra-based radio stations were shut down on Thursday, May 9 by the National Communication Authority (NCA) amidst heavily armed security for operating without valid authorization much to the chagrin of management.
They accused the government of conniving with the NCA to silence their firms.
The Friday half-night vigil, organized by a group called Free Media Vanguards, was attended by former government officials and incumbent Members of Parliament, as well as media practitioners who are of the view that the action of NCA is an affront on press freedom.
In attendance were former Trade and Industry Minister, Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, NDC Communications officer Samuel Gyamfi, former Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority Sylvester Mensah, MP for North Tongu Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, among others.
