Some Ghanaian traders, said to be members of a task force set up by the Ghana Union of Traders’ Association (GUTA), were resisted by their Nigerian counterparts at Tip-toe Lane in Accra on Monday, December 2 in what later degenerated into violence.
The Ghanaians were shutting down shops of foreign retailers as they claim the latter are violating a legislation barring foreigners from doing business in Ghana.
The issue, which has raged on for sometime now, has led to the closure of shops belonging to foreigners.
“It goes beyond the police,” the Nima Divisional Police Commander told journalists.
“It is a recurring issue and it is more or less like a perennial problem. This is not the first time we have encountered this”
ACP Abraham Acquaye advised the two countries’ leadership to find a lasting solution to the impasse.
“We are also waiting for a diplomatic intervention from those at the top as to how we approach it.”
