Group demands immediate release of drivers arrested at galamsey sites

Some regional chairmen of the National Concern Drivers Association have reiterated calls by their national executives on President Nana Akufo-Addo to order the urgent release of their fellow drivers who were “just hired” to drive trucks at galamsey sites. The demand is also premised on claims that “big names” involved in the act have rather been left off the hook. In a statement to the media, they insisted that the drivers were never involved in any illegal mining activity, neither did they own any of the excavators used at the site. They have therefore threatened that if their colleagues are not released before March 6, 2020, “We are ready to put our lives on line to fight for the freedom of the ordinary drivers in this country. “We are calling on the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu to blame the President when any blood spills in Kumasi.” The drivers claim about 32 of their colleagues arrested are currently in police custody. They described the embattled drivers as “innocent souls who are pillars in their families”. They said they would not back down on their demand and are ready to faceoff with the “illegal delta force national security operatives” if they are unleased on them in Kumasi.
