‘Your meal will be placed on a stool outside your door’ – How hotel is ‘serving’ quarantined travelers

Ghana issued a travel restriction last Tuesday, banning visitors from countries with at least 200 cases of coronavirus.

Ghanaians returning to the country were, however, allowed entry but subjected to a mandatory 14-day quarantine.

Hotels were thus contracted to house the returning Ghanaians for the mandatory quarantine.

Though some have claimed they are enjoying the process at the expense of government, others are complaining about the treatment in the hands of hotel staff.

So I arrived in Accra a few hours ago and the first announcement was that we are all getting quarantined. After 2 hours of waiting, we get checked in to a luxurious hotel with free food. The next 14 days will be exciting. Welcome to Day 0. I’ll be updating you.

A letter sighted by 3news.com and purported to have been issued to guests at one of the hotels reveals the quarantined Ghanaians are intensely isolated.

“Meals will be served upon request,” the letter dated Monday, March 23, 2020 indicated.

“You are entitled to Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. Your daily meal allowance is GH¢100 per day.

“Your meal will be placed on a stool outside your door. When you are done, place the tray outside.”

This has stirred controversy as to whether the treatment being given the guests is the best or worst.

The government is placing these Ghanaians on quarantine in order to quickly put them on isolation if any of them tests positive within the next 14 days.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has since ordered a shutdown Ghana’s borders with only goods and cargoes allowed entry by sea, land and air.

Those in quarantine are Ghanaians who arrived in the country between Tuesday, March 17 and Saturday, March 21.

Confirmed cases

Out of a total of 24 confirmed cases in Ghana thus far, 17 are of Ghanaian nationality with only three without any travelling history.

A number of the confirmed cases are Ghanaians resident in Europe, particularly UK and France.

Seven other nationals from Norway, Lebanon, China, France and UK have also contracted the disease.

Aside the death recorded on Saturday, all are said to be in a stable condition.
