The National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Gyamfi, is accusing the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) of being hell-bent on disenfranchising a majority of Ghana’s voting population.
He said the Commission is doing this in cahoots with the National Identification Authority (NIA).
But he insists the NDC will not sit unconcerned for such a scheme to come to fruition.
“We will win this battle. We will stop them,” he stated on The Key Points on TV3/3FM on Saturday, May 16.
He said all legitimate means including mass actions will be employed to stop the EC from compiling a new voters’ register for the December 7 elections.
The NDC last Thursday rekindled its resolve to reject the compilation of a new voters’ register for the December 7 polls.
Addressing journalists at the party’s headquarters in Adabraka-Accra, National Chairman Samuel Ofosu Ampofo accused the Jean Mensa-led Commission of snubbing the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) in decision-making, a marked departure from what has persisted since 1994, in an attempt to rig the elections for the current president.
“Unfortunately, the Jean Mensah-led EC decided from the word go not to accord IPAC the same level of cooperation and respect as had been the case since 1994.
“It is to reassure the electorate of free and fair elections devoid of manipulation that the EC created IPAC whose inputs have over the years helped to guarantee a level playing field for all the political parties.”
Supporting his boss, Sammy Gyamfi said the current voters’ register is credible enough for the purposes of the December 7 polls “and there is no need to do away with it”.
He described their tussle with the EC as a “battle”.
“We will win this battle.”
But also on the programme was New Patriotic Party’s “shadow” General Secretary, Richard Ahiagbah, who insisted that the NDC’s sole aim has been to stop the process right from the outset.
“From beginning, they have sought to stop this process. So they have not invested in the process much less submit any views to be discussed.”
He said the NDC should rather bring ideas on the table as its flagbearer and former president, John Dramani Mahama, admitted sometime back that the EC is capable and independent of running a successful election in the country.
