Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has acknowledged that the demands of protestors who participated in the #OccupyJulorbiHouse cannot be ignored.
According to Dr. Bawumia, the demands are legitimate and thus need to be addressed.
While delivering his victory speech as the flag bearer-elect of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Bawumia said that he became aware of a 3-day demonstration staged by the Ghanaian youth who were requesting for more opportunities for work, improved living conditions among other demands.
“While on the campaign, I became aware of a 3-day demonstration staged by the young people of our country. They had a simple message for the political class: they needed more opportunities for work, they needed improved living conditions, and they wanted improved public services. These are legitimate demands and we cannot ignore them. We will continue to work hard for the people of Ghana,” he said on Saturday November 4.
The Vice President stated that he, together with President Akufo-Addo, have done their best to deal with such demands since they came into power in 2017.
“I have spent the last seven years working alongside the President to fulfill many of these demands, including creating opportunities for the youth, improving the well-being of our people, expanding access to secondary education and healthcare, enhancing the country’s road infrastructure, streamlining access to public services, and leveraging technology for development.”
He also took the opportunity to charge the youth to collaborate with government to resolve the challenges bedeviling the nation especially the youth.
Dr. Bawumia’s remarks come as a response to the #OccupyJulorbiHouse demonstration, which took place between Thursday, September 21 and Saturday, September 23, 2023.
The demonstrators were protesting against the government’s economic policies and alleged corruption, however, they were met with excessive force from the police, on Thursday, September 21. Almost 50 protesters including journalists were also arrested.
