The Director of Strategy, Research and Communication at the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), Samuel Appiah Darko, has defended the recent actions taken by the outfit in fighting corruption and corruption-related activities.
He said efforts by the Office to fight graft has been met with stiff resistance, sometimes becoming life-threatening.
Speaking on News File on Accra-based Joy FM on Saturday, December 7, Mr Appiah Darko revealed that Kissi Agyebeng has survived two assassination attempts just because of his efforts at fighting corruption and corruption-related activities.
“The Special Prosecutor has survived two assassination attempts,” he stated on the current affairs analysis programme.
“Myself, I have been dragged out of my official vehicle and beaten by 17 policemen.”
This comes after calls heightened this week about the OSP.
Parliament went to the extent of debating the relevance of the Office with the Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, suggesting its collapse.
But the spokesperson of the Office noted that the fight against corruption and corruption-related activities, especially those that involve high-profile persons, comes with its own risks.
“People need to understand the gravity of what we are doing. This is not an office that works behind a desk; we face real threats every day in the course of our duties.”
He explained further: “Some citizens are quick to judge, claiming that we haven’t delivered.
“They don’t realise that in criminal investigations, especially those involving influential actors, there are threats and dangers that are not visible to the public.”
